Everyone who follows video games already knows that 2010 is shaping up to be one of the biggest years in gaming history. Between big games being delayed out of 2009 and the titles always scheduled for the year, there are so many huge titles coming out in 2010 that my wallet is already crying. I'm sure each and every one of you has a list of games that you're looking forward to. Here's mine. Presenting Anton's 10 most anticipated games of 2010 (in no particular order).
Bioshock 2
The buzz on BioShock 2 has been a little bit mixed, but the original game bought enough of my good faith that I can't wait to check out the sequel. I'm not sure I'm sold on the multiplayer aspect, but I'll definitely be diving into both it and the campaign when its released.
Dark Void
After some hands-on time with Dark Void, Dark Void went from a game that I was mildly curious about to one that I can't wait to play. A clever mix of Gears of War and Crimson Skies, Dark Void also has an awesome retro feel for a total result that pushes my nerd buttons in a bad way.
Alan Wake
A survival horror game about a horror novelist? How could I resist? Alan Wake looks gorgeous and has a clever TV season structure, as well as some killer lighting effects and in-game weather. I've been waiting for this game for years so I'm a bit worried it will feel somewhat dated when it comes out, but I'll still be picking it up on day one.
Heavy Rain
Is Heavy Rain the best-looking game yet? Quite possibly? But that's only part of the appeal of Heavy Rain. This cyber murder mystery builds on the interesting adventure game systems of Quantic Dream's last game Indigo Prophecy and adds new twists like multiple protagonists that die permanently when you screw up. Heavy Rain may be 2010's most unique game.
Red Dead Redemption
I'm not a big Grand Theft Auto fan, but Rockstar's next open world adventure has got me excited in a big, big way. Set in the dying days of the Old West, Red Dead Redemption looks like a living Clint Eastwood movie, filled with gunslinging action, train robberies, saloon brawls and everything you could want from a Western game. Plus, it looks shockingly great. Red Dead Redemption is high up on my list of 2010's most wanted.
Crackdown 2
The original Crackdown was an amazing game. Crackdown 2 looks to expand on that game in every way, including better integration of online co-op. No other game in 2010 will offer the same kind of unchained mayhem as Crackdown 2, and its unique cel-shaded look makes it one of the most visually distinct.
God of War III
I'm sure God of War III won't bring any significant changes to the God of War formula. That's okay. God of War remains the premiere action franchise today, and it hasn't even had its next-gen debut yet. Kratos' initial PS3 outing will be one of the biggest exclusives of the year, thanks to its smooth, frantic gameplay and stunning visuals.
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Splinter Cell is one of my favorite series of all time, and it's been a few years since the last game. Conviction has had a troubled development cycle, but the resulting game looks amazing. A stealth game that reinvents stealth, Conviction looks fast-paced, brutal and stylish. After years of sneaking around in the shadows, Sam Fisher is back and he's more deadly than ever.
Halo: Reach
Halo 3: ODST was my least-favorite Halo game yet, but counting Bungie out would be just stupid. The developer knows how to make well-balanced gunplay action like few others, and the recently released gameplay trailer was just gorgeous. There are a few things we can assume about Reach that are no-brainers: Multiplayer will be great, the campaign will have some memorable water-cooler moments, and everyone you know will be playing it.
Mass Effect 2
Having recently finished Dragon Age, I'm already jonesing for more BioWare RPG action. The original Mass Effect was one of the most intelligent games I've ever played, treating players like adults who could handle complex political situations. That may not sound like too much fun to some players, but fortunately Mass Effect 2 will also up the ante on sci-fi shooter action. Mass Effect was great, and Mass Effect 2 will be even better.
